Pinky Promise

It’s been a few days since the truck came by our neighborhood for the first time. My little brother, Vernon, I call him V, calls it a monster twuck due to its gigantic size. Twice a year, a truck drives by in our neighborhood spraying chemicals to keep mosquitoes away, but this time was different.

They already sprayed a few months ago for mosquitoes and the truck looked different this time. It sprayed a green looking gas. It had never done that before. I was concerned and wanted to go check it out, but my mom told me not to and that I was being paranoid again.

When we walked outside the next morning, a few of our flower bushes had died. As I reached my hand to touch them, they shriveled to dust. I look around and notice a few of the neighbors plants had died, too. My mom said it smelt like burnt rubber.

For once, I was happy to have breathing tubes so I couldn’t smell the wretched scent. I started to get really anxious. I convinced myself it was a pesticide for certain bugs and ignored it.

It helped me feel better for a few more days. Until the truck came by again. They came by much earlier than they did last time. V was playing on the swings outside when it abruptly drove by our house, still emitting a vibrant green fog. Thankfully, I was near the window and noticed it. I went outside, hoping to get him in before he breathed in the chemicals.

When I reached the swing set, I saw his eyes fall to the back of his head as he tumbled backward. I ran to him and picked him off the ground. He was barely conscious and blood was dripping from his nose. I took him inside and yelled for our mom. I set him on the couch and put a tissue up to his nose.

As she walked in, I explained to her what happened. Instantly, she started panicking. Before I knew it, she was holding him cradle-style and was out the door in a second. We took him to the emergency room where they did a scan on him to see what caused him to pass out. I already knew.

He was all better soon after the test was done so we went home and waited for the results to come back from the doctor. V probably felt like a king that night after how much my mom spoiled him. He got to eat ice cream for dinner and stay up late to watch a movie. It all must have gone to his head.

The next morning he asked me and mom to do everything for him. He kept saying he forgot how to do things. I helped him put his pants on, brush his teeth, and tie his shoes. You do not want to know what my mom helped him with. I just guessed he was too lazy to do any of it himself so he played dumb.
